Black Phoebe

It's been years since I have seen a Black Phoebe and never near the house.  My other sightings have been at Ellwood Beach near the Monarch Butterfly preserve.  Today I looked out into the garden and saw a pair of them.  They have decided to visit the foothills!

  1. If this is the same kind of bird I see here (does yours have what looks like a black jacket, closed at the neck, with a white shirt under it, no bow tie?), I usually see some catching flying bugs over a large ditch (or drainage channel) that runs parallel and to the east of the Rio Grande here west of downtown Albuquerque. Hummingbirds also hover over the same water catching gnats. They and other fly-catching birds aren't here this time of year, it's too cold for bugs. I think the Black Phoebe is a fascinating little bird. Note that they share that same channel with Canada Geese and various ducks who take their babies there to learn to swim in a bit rougher water.
