A bud on a Flying Saucer Cactus

   I was watching this bud grow bigger and bigger on my Flying Saucer Cactus and I sensed it was going to open the evening of June 4th.  I set up a timelapse camera, hoping to capture the opening of the bloom and make a short video.  We've all seen those videos and they are pretty cool.  I was hoping that it would be fully open before it got too dark for a picture.

   The timelapse camera was set to take a picture every 10 seconds, and here are the "highlights".

As you can see, the big opening took place when it was too dark for a picture.

In this last photo you can see what's left of the two blooms from my June 1st post.  The blooms only last a few days and longer if we don't get drippy fog!

Time-lapse of Cactus Blooming

I made a time-lapse video of a cactus blooming.  This cactus sits in a shady area of our balcony. Yesterday I noticed that it was going to bloom, so I set the time lapse camera up to start taking pictures every thirty seconds beginning at 8:00 AM.  This 24 second video captures about 3.5 hours of cactus blooming.

Gazebo Flower Show - Time-lapse pictures of the setup.

I mounted a time-lapse camera so that it looked down on the courtyard and photographed the setup, show and tear down of the flower show.  The camera was taking a picture every fifteen minutes from 9:00 AM till 6:00 PM, beginning two weeks before the show and ending a week after the show.  I ended up removing pictures that didn't have any changes from the previous picture and then used video editing software to make this four minute and eight second movie.

 

First Shot!

Here is the first shot of a time-lapse project I have set up at Gazebo Plants and Flowers for the big flower show.  It should be interesting watching the courtyard transform into a colorful display of begonias, bromeliads, orchids and other flower plants.  The camera is taking a picture every 15 minutes from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  After the show I will take all of the pictures and make a short video.

Viola Timelapse Photography

I thought it would be interesting to plant some Viola seeds under some grow lights and turn on the time lapse camera.  From these pictures I have made two videos.  The first video starts when the plant has just poked through the soil.  It's eight weeks of growing condensed into 39 seconds of video.

 Of course another plant was the first to bloom, so this second video is a different plant.  This is seven days of growth condensed into a 30 second video. 

The camera I used is called the PlantCam and its made by the same company that makes the BirdCam.  I had it taking one picture every 30 minutes for 11 hours a day.  I used video editing software to make the final videos.
