Mourning Doves Hanging Out In The Garden
This afternoon I sat on the steps on the hillside watching a few birds. Mostly Mourning Doves and this one Western Scrub-Jay that was in the Pine tree above me.

A Western Scrub-Jay and the Sunflower!
From the kitchen window I could see a Western Scrub-Jay land on the top of a sunflower. Then it would bend over, grab a kernel and fly off to a tree branch to open and eat the sunflower kernel. After watching this cycle a few times I grabbed a camera with a telephoto lens but was unsuccessful taking a picture. Although the Western Scrub-Jays are somewhat comfortable with me around, that wasn't the case with this bird. So I set up the BirdCam and got these pictures.
On the left side of this picture you can partially see the Western Scrub-Jay. This is the branch it would fly to and eat the kernel of the sunflower.

BirdCam on the Birdbath
Yesterday afternoon I set the BirdCam up in front of the birdbath, just to see who visits. A raccoon, house finch, western scrub-jay and a mourning dove stopped by for a drink of water.

Passion Butterfly Larva
Last season some caterpillars nearly ate two of my passion flower vines. So this year I'm making an effort to remove these caterpillars as soon as they show up. Turns our these are Gulf Fritillary or as they are more commonly know Passion Butterfly. The larvae feed exclusively on species of passion flower. The spines are soft to the touch and do not sting. However, the larvae are poisonous if eaten, as the bright coloration advertises.
So far my passion flower vines are off to a good start and beginning to bloom.
A week ago I found three caterpillers and removed them from the vine. One of them is in the picture on the left. See how much bigger the one on the right is, this is the one I found today.
The Scrub-Jay knows the caterpillar is poisonous and took only peanuts.
I'll let a few caterpillars stay and transform into a chrysalis and then into a butterfly. I just won't let them eat the entire vine this year.
