A short visit to Devereux Slough

I made a quick visit to Devereux Slough which is located west of the UCSB campus.  I wanted to check out the birding.  The last time I was in the area was about twenty years ago.  Back then you could drive past the Devereux School and park your car a short walk from the beach.  That has now been closed to the public and there is UCSB permit parking only.  It's now a good hike from the main road to the foot path that circles the slough.

The area is protected and you can only hike around the parameter of the place.

However, I was able to get some pictures of birds from the path the followed the road on the east side of the slough.  It was a foggy day and will return on a sunny day to spend more time photographing the area.

I believe this is an immature male Northern Shoveler.  Notice the spoonbill shape of it's bill.
