Black-headed Grosbeak

This is the first year I have seen Black-headed Grosbeaks in our garden.  I see them every evening so hopefully they will stick around this summer.

First Oriole of 2011!

Two weeks ago I spotted a female oriole near a feeder by the kitchen door.  She was here for a minute, then flew away and I haven't seen her since.  I have been keeping all of the Oriole feeders full and so far the hummingbirds are very happy.  Then on Tuesday the BirdCam took the first pictures of an oriole for 2011.  Here is a 45 second video of a female oriole getting her fill of nectar.

Hopefully she will stick around and her mate will show up soon, so that they can set up house for the summer.

White Buffalo, the Albino White Crowned Sparrow!

My friend Leland sent these photographs that he took in his yard of an Albino White-crowned Sparrow.  This is a very rare bird and he has named it White Buffalo.  I think that is a very approritate name.  White buffalo are American bison (American buffalo) that are considered to be sacred signs in several Native American religions, and thus have great spiritual importance in those cultures and are visited for prayer and other religious ceremonies.  Lelands says that this bird has moved on with the other White-crowned Sparrows, but I'm sure it blessed Leland and Diana's home before traveling on.

Bald Eagle Chicks

Have you looked at the Bald Eagle Cams lately?  It was three weeks ago that I first posted about them.  The chicks are really growing and here are some screen captures from today.  The Eagle Cam at Duke Farms in Hillsborough, N.J. had the closest view of the chicks.

I found a Walking Stick!

I was cutting up some dead palm fronds and found this walking stick.
It has great camouflage for hiding.

I put it back on the trunk of the palm tree.
